From disconnection to belonging: Building stronger communities through nature and intergenerational understanding

Our mission

We bring people of all ages together through meaningful workshops and mentoring that help them understand one another, gain fresh perspectives, and grow life skills—cultivating purpose, connection, and community.

We are working to facilitate the connection of 100 intergenerational pairs in Brighton & Hove by 2027.

What We Do

Symbiosis: Our intergenerational mentoring programme

We run a mentoring programme for 18+ in the community and with businesses/organisations. Our mentoring programme has two important features:

  • We use a type of mentoring called 'co-mentoring' where each participant is both a ‘learner’ and a ‘teacher’ participating in a reciprocal exchange of knowledge, stories and experiences
  • Our session activities are also inspired by, or held in, nature which is a positive and non-hierarchical learning space.

Nurtured in Nature workshop

An experiential nature-based learning workshop for multiple generations to come together to nurture personal growth and sow seeds for ideas for creating change and creative exploration. Our workshops invite intergenerational groups to explore with courage, creativity and curiosity.

Community Connection Walks

We regularly run walks for organisations to support team dynamics/employee engagement and in the community to bring generations together in a relaxed and engaging way.

Our Vision

Wild Purpose envisions a community where people of all ages feel connected, understood, and valued. We want to break down the walls between generations by creating spaces where all younger and older adults can learn from each other, share experiences, and grow together.

Our Impact

We use a mix of different research approaches to gain rich insights to support the monitoring and evaluation of all our programmes. These insights ensure we are continually developing our programmes to make sure they are fit for purpose and support the needs of the communities we work with.

About us

Wild Purpose is a community-rooted initiative led by three women — Karen Stenning, Kata Armitage, and Alice Banfield — who each bring the insight of their own small businesses in research, entrepreneurship, and coaching. Together, they create inclusive, welcoming spaces that foster connection, growth and belonging.

United by a shared commitment to community, intergenerational relationships and authentic collaboration, Wild Purpose works to strengthen the bonds that hold people together. Through group facilitation, nature based experiences, community events and  co-mentoring programme Symbiosis, Karen, Kata, and Alice nurture environments where people of all ages feel valued.

Inspired by the outdoors, personal growth, storytelling and local connection, they bring together insight, empathy and structure to support meaningful conversations and stronger relationships across generations.

Alice partners with local businesses and charities to develop their communications, services, and offerings through community research and participatory insight work, helping organisations design with — not just for — the people they serve.

Karen’s career spans the charity sector and entrepreneurship, with a focus on social and environmental change. She now supports grassroots initiatives through grant giving and leads nature-based retreats as a Therapeutic Wellbeing Practitioner. A passionate advocate for diversity and social justice, Karen creates platforms to amplify underrepresented voices and foster intergenerational learning.

Kata coaches with the body in mind. She is a body-oriented coach and facilitator with a background in drama teaching and the arts. She is on a mission to bring more joy to communities with Forgotten Fun through holistic play, embodied dance experiences and coaching.
